The Tech is a charitable Community Benefit Society and its constitution states that it shall have the purpose of ensuring the preservation of The Holmfirth Technical Institute (Est. 1894) to further, in today’s context, its original founders’ ideals of providing education for children and adults and supporting the prosperity of the area.

Specifically, the Society shall seek to:

  • benefit the residents of the Holme Valley and the neighbourhood, without distinction of age, sex, sexual orientation, race or of political, religious or other opinions by advancing education and providing facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the objective of improving the conditions of life for the residents.
  • advance the education of the public in the subjects of, in particular but not exclusively, music and art.
  • relieve hardship or unemployment of those in financial and economic need, in particular, but not exclusively, by the provision access to facilities and workspace and other assistance to enable such persons to become self-supporting.
The activities that take place in The Tech will be driven by the community and their needs.  The Tech management will aim to facilitate those activities that can reasonably be accommodated, build on the activities already in place and meet the objects of the charity as stated above.

Plans for the building

We aim to open the building for community use as soon as practical after purchase and learn from experience how the community wishes to use the space whilst also ensuring we meet our financial objectives. This means that some spaces will be used for specific purposes, but there is more flexibility over others. More detail will be available in the Member Share Offer document when the offer is launched. Below we have provided some indicative floor layouts and uses.

Ground Floor

Before opening for community use, we will need to construct a gents toilet on the ground floor and reconfigure the kitchen area.  The area shown as a hall to the left currently comprises three separate rooms, some of which were constructed in recent times. We think that this area may become the main hall available for community use and occasional commercial events.

We propose to maintain the cafe in its current location. We see this as a community and business meeting area; an area to relax whilst children and grandchildren are participating in activities or for business users to relax and socialise, especially at lunch time, whether with their own lunch or purchased from the cafe or elsewhere.

The cafe may also be used for events, perhaps Sunday Jazz sessions over lunch or for pop-up restaurants in the evening.

The Tech will employ a Centre Manager who will be based in the office in the foyer area.


The basement will be home to the Children's Art School and a rehearsal room for bands; we hope to provide a rock school here in the evenings and weekends for local children and teenagers.

The main hall may remain as such for health and well being activities (pilates, yoga, dance classes etc.), or we may elect to split this space into smaller rooms if this seems to fit demand better.

The basement also provides disabled access to the building through the lift entrance and a separate access to the car park level is also present.

The basement also includes a large store room, which may be used to store equipment for events and for groups.

We will consider installing a shower room in the basement to encourage business and leisure users to cycle/run to The Tech.

First Floor

The first floor will comprise desks to rent and small 'incubator style' offices. Depending on demand for space, one room may remain as a training and teaching space for quieter activities. We may also consider letting one room to an anchor tenant provided they fit the ethos of The Tech

One room is currently allocated to provide meeting / conference rooms. These will be available for use by all in the valley.  In the early evenings these may double as music teaching rooms, but later are likely to be available for community meetings. 

The first floor has very high ceilings and we believe that, should it prove necessary and economically and technically viable, we could extend the space available with mezzanine floors in some rooms.

The business space will help ensure a sustainable economic future for The Tech whilst facilitating the growth of new businesses and career opportunities in the valley.
